The latest anthology from the excellent people at Australian Poetry is out in the world! It was edited by Michelle Cahill and Lucy Dougan. They’ve selected a fantastic collection of poems by poets like – Magan Magan, David Ades, Tricia Dearborn and Kate Crowcroft.
You’ll also find my poem – Planes are landing in the attic – it’s one of the poems that will be included in my next collection – Nekhau, due out from Recent Work Press in August 2022. I’ve been slowly redrafting poems for the collection and Planes are landing in the attic is one of the poems that has changed quite a lot. Here’s a quick comparison of a few tiny changes made in the opening stanza; first the Australia Poetry Anthology version and then the latest (surely final!) draft that will be included in Nekhau. Always interesting to see how even the smallest changes can shift the feel of a poem. There’s much more substantial stuff being changed at the end of the new version!
Opening stanza in Australian Poetry Anthology
The houses we rent have too many stairs
we’re always climbing to attics
agents call them lofts – we know
what they really are – sometimes we sleep up there
Current opening stanza
The houses we rent have too many stairs
we’re always climbing to attics,
agents call them lofts. We know
what they really are, sometimes we sleep in the empty swank
