Hamburg in Island #144

Island is a fantastic Australian magazine, based in Tasmania. In the last two years they’ve reinvented the look and content of the magazine; they’re consistently publishing  sharp, adventurous writing, so I’m pretty happy to have a poem in the latest issue.

Issue #144 and subscriptions are available here. They’re definitely worth a look!

They’ve included my poem Hamburg, the poem went through a ridiculous number of drafts…so I have pages of lines and stanzas that didn’t quite make the published version. I’ve decided to post a few bits and pieces that were cut.

And a friendly reminder, as of April 2017, my first collection – BONE INK – is available here

Hamburg – the cuts

Toss identity from pockets,
let it ripple in the harbour.
Friend, I’ll forget your fingers in their messy states of desire

The Rathaus must be dripping
ice, rock salt strewn on our streets of Sternschanze.
I hope you’ve crunched some pale messages
for me.

Soon enough, if we can stay quiet,
we’ll be coughing our polluted lungs
into unblemished hands.
