Highly Commended – Spiers Prize 2025

And…adding to the earlier news about UWAP Spiers Prize for unpublished manuscripts.
This week the results came in, my verse novel – Flying Hearts – was highly commended (read second prize) in the young adult category.

Very happy to see it getting a bit of love!

Here’s what the judges had to say:
HIGHLY COMMENDED
Flying Hearts by Rico Craig (young adult category)
A wonderfully authentic and bitingly brilliant verse novel of four teenagers from the wrong side of the tracks, who find connection and belonging in their shared fight against social injustice and private school tormentors. Discussions of toxic masculinity and patriarchy fuel this tale of modern life, that would at least have got teens from all backgrounds discussing, and potentially debating, the commentary and wider implications within.

Massive congratulations to Zahina Maghrabi for winning the YA category. Look forward to reading her novel when it comes out!

Oh, I also got a certificate – very nifty, thanks UWA Publishing!!
